When Soiichiro Honda thought of venturing into the automobile industry in the 1950’s, he wasn’t sure of his company’s ability to dwell into this sector. He is famous as a fanatic of new technology and every resource he had during those days were poured into his beloved motorcycle project, the Honda CB series, which in a very short time overtook its British rival, the Triumph.

The success of Toyota in capturing a huge market share in the automotive industry and putting the Land Cruiser and Hi-Lux more popular than more established Land Rover gave the inspiration needed for Honda to move into the production of four wheelers instead of just concentrating on two wheelers. Unlike its rival, Honda did not venture into the building of off road vehicles or diesel powered heavy duty vehicle but ventured into a niche market that many considered small.
