Cylinder Head Porting-What it's All About

Cylinder head porting - this is a common term in engine upgrading but do we really understand what it's all about - better still, are we doing it 'RIGHT'?

Basically, porting refers to the process of modifying the intake and exhaust ports of an internal combustion engine with the aim of improving the quality and quantity of the airflow. How does this relate to power? "Imagine the engine as one BIG air pump and it's rated by its volume. Volume in this case would be measured in cc or cubic capacity," said Charlie, founder of Matspeed during our recent meet. "And porting is aimed at further enhancing this BIG air pump's efficiency," he added. Here's an example, a 1000cc engine = 1000cc volume of air and a 1000cc engine capable of producing 50hp can be said to be having 50 per cent volumetric efficiency. That's....
